Yesterday we looked at how Matthew opened his Gospel with an account of Jesus’ ancestry, which revealed not only that he was the promised Messiah, but also that his arrival was part of a much larger story that was linked to King David and Abraham. Today we will read of Jesus’ birth and how this fulfilled the ancient promise from Isaiah 7:14 that ‘the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means ‘God with us’!
But, before you begin today’s reflection maybe just pause , turn your attention to God and pray the prayer below:
Lord, may we, like the wise men from foreign lands,
observe the rising of your star in the darkness of this season.
We may not have gold, frankincense, or myrrh,
But we offer you today our time, attention, and trust.
Amen

Quotes: ‘God With Us’
‘God with us. These four words express the character of God, the identity of Jesus, the work of the Spirit. They are the Christian testimony about the past, witness in the present, and hope for the future. Each word offers itself as the heart of the gospel … I maintain that the word ‘with’ is the most important word in theology…

‘The wonder of the truth of Emmanuel (God with us), can only be truly appreciated as we acknowledgethat God had every right to be against us’

Advent Poem: The Word Became Flesh
The Word became flesh!
God became human!
the invisible became visible!
the untouchable became touchable!
eternal life experienced temporal death!
the transcendent one descended and drew near!
the unlimited became limited!
the infinite became finite!
the immutable became mutable!
the unbreakable became fragile!
spirit became matter!
eternity entered time!
the independent became dependent!
the almighty became weak!
the loved became the hated!
the exalted was humbled!
glory was subjected to shame!
fame turned into obscurity!
from inexpressible joy to tears of unimaginable grief!
from a throne to a cross!
from ruler to being ruled!
from power to weakness!

Closing Blessing
May the Sun of Righteousness shine upon you and scatter the darkness from before your path;

Praying for all those in darkness to know the inbreaking of the light of God’s presence today. How wonderful the promise that He is ‘with’ us when, as the quote says above, He has every reason to be against us. Come Lord Jesus – let us receive the miraculous gift of Your Presence. Amen.
I really loved the bit about ‘God with us’ – telling us of the character of God, the identity of Jesus and the work of the Spirit.
This is a rich resource, guys – bless you!
Solidarity with those who live in darkness – while living in the unshakable hope of those who expect the dawn. I’m going to be musing on that one today.
I was struck today between the contrast of yesterday’s reading about Jesus’ human ancestral heritage and today’s focus on his miraculous birth and divine heritage. It was like Matthew was saying ‘see the ancient promises can be trusted but they may be fulfilled in wildly unexpected ways’.
