The Apostle’s Creed: I BELIEVE

God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
therefore we will not fear,
though the earth should give way;
though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;
though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble with its tumult.

(Psalm 46:1-3)

When all that is thought to be secure and stable around us begins to shake, tremble, and give way, we are left in a profoundly vulnerable and disorientating place. At the start of this series I have suggested that we, as a society, are facing such a time, as those institutions and authorities that felt so secure and so stable have found thelmseves being shaken to the core as our trust in them has slowly eroded. The fagility of the world is being exposed.

The encouragement that we take from the Psalm above is that when these things take place, when all that we normally rely on to gain our bearings and navigate our way through has crumbled, that we can rely on God to be present to help. The Psalmist says that God is our refuge and strength, that he is the place we can turn to for shelter and stability during times of crisis.

In examining the Apostles’ Creed together we will be seeking to do exactly that; to find refuge and strength in the truth of who God is and what God has done for us. This ancient confession of faith is time-tested truth for a post-truth world. It is a strong foundation upon which may build our lives.

In this teaching we explored the first two words of the creed, ‘I believe’, and if you dont think that there is much to be said about such a simple phrase then have a listen as you might be surprised!

As always, we would love to hear any thoughts, reflections, questions, or feedback you might have about this, so please do take a moment and leave a comment below!
