Mighty God of judgement and salvation,
of old ends and new beginnings;
would you guide us in this Lenten season,
through the threatening landscapes of this life
and out into the good inheritance
that you have promised us.
Amen

Daily Scripture: Psalm 25:1-10

Find the above scripture in your bible and read slowly – you might want to read it out loud. You can also find it here.

Lenten Reflection

The book of Psalms is the prayerbook of the people of God, a trusted guide that helps us and guides us in our prayers. Therefore, Early church Father Athanasius once said that the Psalms are unique in that whilst most of the Bible speaks to us, the Psalms speak for us. Having now read the Psalm, let us encourage you to also now pray it and make the ‘I’ that speaks in the Psalm your very own voice.

Maybe try writing the Psalm out in your own words.

Lenten Quote

‘The Psalms are an assurance that when we pray, we are not expected to deny the deepness of our own human pilgrimage’

Walter Brueggemann

Lenten Song: Kyrie Eleison (Lord have Mercy)

Closing Blessing

In your wanderings through
the wildnerness places of this life,
May you come to know the guidance,
provision, protection, and presence,
of the Holy One of Israel
in your midst.
May you discover in this season,
the blessings of the desert,
where false gifts are exposed
and true treasures revealed.
Amen

We would love to make this a shared learning experience as much as possible so therefore please consider adding any thoughts, questions and insights that might arise for you in the comments section below. We would love to hear what God is up to in this time!

  1. Whether a heart that is agitated or humble, a heart that is narrowing or widening, broken or bursting, God will guide us and teach us in his ways.
This is where my hope is found.

‘according to your love remember me,
    for you, Lord, are good.’

‘ All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful..’

  2. Whislt praying through the Psalm this morning I was struck by the prayer of the Psalmist for God to make his ways and paths known to him, for God to lead him in his truth and to teach him (25:4-5) and the idea that God willl even instruct sinners in his ways (25:8) but that this needs to be held together with humility (25:9), obedience (25:10), and the fear of the Lord (25:12).

  3. Praying through the psalm, allowing those words to become personal, rather than just the voice of the psalmist, takes us more deeply into that loving parental relationship that our Father has with us. There is very much the sense of ourselves as prodigal children coming back to Dad. And not only can we pray this as children, but we can pray this as parents over our children, and all the prodigals we know, calling them back to our Father.
