Daily Prayer

Take a moment before you begin this morning and just slowly and meaningfully pray this prayer.

In fervent cries and whispered groans, hear us Jesus
In unmet needs and lonely spaces, see us Jesus
When overwhelmed and lost in fog, guide us Jesus
When feelings numb and distractions plenty, you love Jesus!
Amen

Daily Scripture: Jeremiah 31:31-34

Find the above scripture in your bible and read slowly – you might want to read it out loud. You can read it here.

Lenten Reflection

This miracle of having our hearts changed so that we will know the Lord and live in His ways is so overwhelming. It is just like when the prophet Ezekiel spoke of a day when we would have a heart of flesh instead of a heart of stone and be given the Spirit so that we might live rightly (Ezek, 36:26-27)

No longer needing to search for the Lord or try to keep external laws, we can exchange our hearts and gain a measure of His heart. Our desire then becomes to please Him and let the love He has poured into us overflow to others. We will need to keep on learning how to live this new life but although we may not be perfect, we can keep out working our salvation from the inside changes of heart Jesus has achieved for us.

This was the desire of King David who, despite His great sin and other failings, was a man loved by God and who loved His God in return. In fact, when David was chosen to be king, God said to the prophet Samuel, ‘the Lord does not see as humans see, they look at the outward appearance but the Lord looks at the heart’ ( 1 Sam. 16:7). It appears that it is true then that the heart of the matter is the matter of the heart.

Lenten Quote

God’s word teaches us that when we receive Christ as our Saviour and Lord, He gives us a new nature (see 2 Corinthians 5;17) . He gives us His nature. He also gives us a spirit of discipline and self – control (see 2 Timothy 1;7) which is vital in allowing us to choose the ways of our new nature. And He gives us a sound mind. That means we can think about things properly withoutbeing controlled by emotion. Every believer can be thankful that the way we were passes away and we have all the equipment we need for a brand new way of behaving.

Lenten Song: Your Heart

Closing Blessing

May the voice of love steady your feet as you follow Him in all His ways
May His kindness be a balm to life’s hard edges and thorns
May His great compassion and mercy fill you with wonder
And may his wisdom lead you to the secret place
May he ever restore to you the joy of your salvation
Amen.

  1. “The heart of the matter is the matter of the heart”. Wow …always… powerful words
How is my heart? Such a foundational all important question not always easily answered but God unwraps us so we can see ..thank God he cares so passionately about our hearts

  2. Today’s reflection got me thinking about what holds me back from going deeper and further with God. I was struck by Jeremiah 31 v 34 where God states that He forgives and chooses to forget. I am not at that place yet. I can still remember my past failures and failings. It’s as if they are taking up the space that should be occupied by the heart that God wants me to have. I guess today is a good day to gave a heart transplant.

  3. My Hebrew Word study today was ‘Devek’ which means ‘hug or embrace’. It spoke about a way to protect the heart of someone you love is to hug or embrace them. How Gods invitation is always arms open to embrace us as we are, for intimacy, to be heart to heart. Will I meet that open heart with my own?
