This week in our Advent journey we turn our attention to the Gospel of John where in the opening 18 verses he highlight the themes of creation and new creation in Christ. But before you begin today’s reflection maybe just pause, turn your attention to God and pray the prayer below:
Lord Jesus,
Word at the beginning,
God the only Son,
Close to the Father’s heart…
Let the darkness be overcome
by the brilliance of your light.
Daily Scripture: John 1:12-17
Find the above scripture in your bible and read slowly – you might want to read it out loud. You can also find it here.
Advent Quotes
‘It is important to note the filial distinction which John makes in his Gospel between Jesus and believers … Jesus is always and only identified as ‘Son’ and believers are always named ‘children’. He is the Son and we are God’s children.
| Trevor Burke
This man who is in so many ways a human being just like us has also something about him that is uncanny … He is, as he says here, from another world. The Christian church calls this the incarnation: the descent of God from the eternal realm of uncreated light into the violence, darkness, sickness, and death of this world. The Lord Jesus says this in John 8:23—“You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world.”

Advent Poem: The Word Made Flesh
“Light looked down and beheld Darkness.
‘There will I go,’ said Light.
Peace looked down and beheld War.
‘There will I go,’ said Peace.
Love looked down and beheld Hatred.
‘There will I go,’ said Love.
So came Light and shone.
So came Peace and gave rest.
So came Love and brought life.
And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.”
| Laurance Housman
Advent Song: Glory to God
Closing Benediction
What manner of love is this!
That we should be called ‘children of God’!
But this is who we are;
sons and daughters of the king,
with an eternal inheritance in his kingdom.
Therefore, may the Spirit of the Son
teach us to live in the glorious freedom
of our adoption,
to the glory of the Father,
our Abba.
Amen.

One Comment on “Advent Week 4: THURSDAY”
Loving all the poems and how this one describes Jesus’ continuous choice to come right into the darkness, the pain, the suffering, the loneliness, the sickness… and where he is, there is light, healing, provision, company, peace and truth. A never ending perfect gift.
