Shared Practice of Prayer

Today we want to invite you to take some time to pray what is known as ‘the Lord’s prayer’. It is probably the most famous prayer in the world and is prayed by millions of people all over the world every single day. It is called ‘the Lord’s prayer’ for this is the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples to pray in Matthew 6:9-13 when they asked him to teach them how to pray.

A guy named Ron Rolheiser tells the story of an eldery priest whose life was marked by a profound sense of peace and wisdom and who was one day asked about the secret to his own prayer life and he answers like this…

‘this is what I do: no matter what my day is like, no matter what’s on my mind, no matter what my distractions and temptations are, I am faithful to this: Once a day I pray the Lord’s prayer as best I can from where I am at that moment’.

This is the invitation to you today: to pray the Lord’s prayer as best you can from where you are at this monent. So, take some time out, whether that be 5, 10, 20 minutes or more, and, in the words of Ron Rolheise, ‘pray this prayer with as much sincerity and focus as you can muster at the moment’!

So take a moment, breathe deeply, join your voice to millions of others today
and and pray the following…

Our Father, who is in heaven
Hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

For yours is the kingdom,
the power,
and the glory,
forever and ever.
Amen
